This talk will discuss the current Manchester Museum exhibition, ‘Gifts for the Gods’, introducing the practice of votive animal mummification in ancient Egypt.
Using examples from the Museum’s animal mummy collection, the role of the British and their involvement with the discovery, excavation, romanticisation, collection, curation, scientific study and conservation of animal mummies, will be explored.
Current research taking place at the University of Manchester will be explained, giving an insight into the ways in which modern scientific techniques can help to investigate mummies.
