Aged 50+? Concerned about pension scams? Help is at hand!

The recent introduction of pension reforms gave people considerable freedom to decide what to do with their pension pots. Sadly, the freedoms also resulted in an increase in fraudsters targeting over 55s - putting their hard-earned retirement savings at risk.

Research conducted by Which? found that a third of over 55s have been contacted about their pensions by companies that could be fraudulent. A Pension Wise appointment will help you understand how to protect yourself from scams and report them if you see them.
Call 0161 830 2070 for an appointment.

Community Alarm Service - Annual Report 2014 - 15

The Community Alarm Service (CAS) provides a range of 24/7 services which support our most vulnerable customers by helping them to remain independent in their own homes. The service prevents the unnecessary admission of Manchester residents into hospital, long term residential care or having to face the upheaval of having to live with relatives.

The service provides the reassurance to our customers and their relatives that if help is needed, the customer can simply press their community alarm pendant, which will immediately open a telecommunications link with our operator in the Control Room. Where necessary, an appropriate home visit response would then be arranged by CAS. Where necessary, CAS will inform one of the Greater Manchester "blue light" services, be it the ambulance, police or even fire services on behalf of customers.

For more information about the service or for details about viewing the Annual Report contact Donna Conway on 0161 273 2574.

My Generation Over 50s Club night

We’re on the move again... to Alter Ego, Princess St, Manchester

My Generation Club regulars were sad to hear of the closure of the Roadhouse on Newton Street - the venue had generously provided members with a home for the best part of 2014. An appeal to club owners in Manchester through the Manchester Evening News resulted in a kind offer from Alter Ego on Princess Street, the current home of the legendary Twisted Wheel.

Why not join members of My Generation on opening night on Sunday 1st November 2015, from 7.00pm for an evening of the coolest club sounds of the 50s, 60s and 70s, as always you’re bound to hear some of the tunes of your generation and there’ll be live music too from The Cavernites, tickets are still just £5.00 and are available in advance or on the door.

North City Nomads - Great Days Out for older people living in North Manchester

When was the last time you had a really good day out with friends, or sat on a pier enjoying fish and chips or an ice-cream?

For some older people these kinds of days out are a distant memory. People who live alone, or who are not part of a social group, can struggle to make friends and can miss out on holidays and day trips.  North City Nomads is a membership group open to all residents living in north Manchester - the group already has over 450 members. Once registered as a member you will be invited to apply for day trips as they are organised.  As well as enjoying a great day out there's the potential of making new friends and finding out more about other activities that local people are enjoying.

In June members of the group enjoyed a fabulous day out in Southport and then on 25th August the Nomads set off again, this time to Llandudno.  Both trips have been a huge success and members are already looking forward to the next trip to the Chester Christmas Markets.

Registration for membership is now open for trips which will be taking place in 2016. For a registration form or for more information contact Tracey Annette on 0161 234 4299 or email t.annette@manchester.gov.uk

Golden Voices Community Choir - Celebrating singing together for over five years

Over recent years, singing as part of a choir has become very popular, particularly since Gareth Malone helped to launch the beautiful Military Wives choir who topped the charts at Christmas 2011 with their song, "Wherever You Are". Since then more and more Community Choirs have formed up and down the country.  One of Manchester's very own, open access Community Choirs - The Golden Voices, rehearse each week at Band on the Wall on Swan Street.  Being an open access choir means that people who have no previous experience of singing can join.

Rehearsal dates throughout September and October are: 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th September and the 1st, 8th, 22nd and 29th October. All sessions are held at BOTW apart from the 17th September when rehearsal will be at Halle St Michael. Prospective new members are welcome to pop in and join in a rehearsal before signing up as a member. There is a small weekly charge.

As well as enjoying a new activity and meeting new friends you'll also be improving your health - regular singing can improve your breathing and posture and will hopefully make you feel happier. The Choir has always been regarded as more than a singing group, “we’re a friendship group”, say the Golden Voices.

You can view clips and images of their performance and even make enquiries about membership at: www.facebook.com/goldenvoicescommunitychoir or for more information contact Julie Jones on 07906 201262 email choir@goldenvoiceschoir.com
