Ageing in Place: Independence and Communities - 10 February - Keele University

Ageing in Place: Independence and Communities
Wednesday 10 February 2016,        Keele University
British Psychological Society Seminar Series: Beyond Boundaries: Exploring Psychologies of Ageing

Many older people have lived in their neighbourhoods for a large part of their lives and developed various social relationships with their neighbours. However, they often report being excluded from organizations and institutions in their own neighbourhoods, and not having the opportunity to become involved in social and civic activities. In addition, a significant minority report limited social contact with others and feelings of loneliness and social isolation. This seminar will explore ways of understanding ageing in place and ways of enhancing community participation among older people.

New Safe and Well visits from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service

A Safe and Well visit is a person-centred home visit carried out by both Operational and non-Operational staff within Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. The visit expands the scope of previous home checks by focussing on health and crime prevention, as well as fire.

A Safe and Well visit  will involve the systematic identification of, and response to, health, wellbeing and home security issues in addition to focussing on fire risk reduction.

An effective Safe and Well visit takes a holistic approach to reducing risk. This is achieved by considering the individual, their home environment and lifestyle. It places the wishes, beliefs, needs and abilities of the individual at the heart of the intervention.

Throughout a Safe and Well visit our aim is to empower and motivate people to make positive changes to their health, wellbeing and fire safety. By doing this the process should not be limited to merely signposting to other agencies, but will also look to reduce risks during the initial visit where appropriate.

What a Safe and Well check can involve: -

A light touch health check of all individuals
Identification of risk factors while in the home
Provision of brief advice or interventions
Provision of appropriate risk reduction equipment
Referral to specialist advice and support where appropriate
Signposting to further useful information

Over the last 10 years there has been a dramatic fall in the number of accidental fires, and deaths and injuries caused by fire. This is largely due to the prevention work carried out by the Fire Service.

The people who are at higher risk of having a fire are also the same people other agencies are keen to support - for example they may have mobility issues, need support with mental health or frail.

Age Friendly Manchester Culture Champions

Within Manchester city centre there are lots of arts and cultural venues including the Football Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Central Library and the Royal Exchange Theatre, to name a few. Most of these venues offer free admission and also offer free talks and tours on certain days whether you decide to visit on your own, with a friend or in a group.

Despite the fact that there is so much on offer sometimes older people find it difficult to access information about opportunities that are open to them. If you are a frequent visitor (over 50) to our cultural venues, or a resident involved in cultural activities and feel you are able to encourage and enthuse others to take advantage of what is on offer then you could be an Age Friendly Manchester Culture Champion.

The role of champion is:

to help shape Manchester Council’s Age Friendly Manchester Cultural Offer programme
to inform their local networks about cultural events in the city and encourage participation in these events.
to attend cultural celebration events
to co-design activities for older people with cultural organisations.

To find out more about becoming an Age Friendly Culture Champion contact Claire Cowell on 0161 275 8459 or 07776 170688 or email claire.cowell@manchester.ac.uk

Age and the body: Identity and image in later life (Seminar) - Friday 4 December 2015

Friday 4 December 2015, Seminar 2.00pm – 4.00pm (free networking lunch from 1.00pm)

Meeting rooms 1 & 2, The Nowgen Centre, 29 Grafton Street, Manchester, M13 9WU

Speakers:
Since at least the eighteenth century, consumer markets have responded to the needs of ageing populations. Some of these aids have had practical functions, such as walking sticks, pain relief, or commodes, while others have addressed issues of personal appearance, such as hair dye, ‘anti’ ageing cosmetics or false teeth.
At this seminar, Professor Julia Twigg (Sociology, University of Kent) and Dr Sasha Handley and Professor Julie-Marie Strange (History, University of Manchester) present research on how men and women respond to changes in ageing bodies today and in the past. Drawing on case studies, the presentations consider how changes in the ageing body’s appearance and function can challenge our personal identities and afford opportunities to develop our image and identity in new ways.
The second half of the seminar will invite discussion with a panel on the issues raised around identity and image in later life with representatives from Age UK, the Whitworth Art Gallery and the independent living/mobility aid industry.

Age and the body: Identity and image in later life Seminar - Friday 4 December
